We certainly don't lack adventures in Maryland. Our biggest challenge is whittling down our choices to how we feel on a particular day. Are we in the mood for an adrenaline-inducing adventure or a more laid-back experience? This scenic lake trail in Maryland promises an idyllic way to spend an hour or two when we’re in the mood for a leisurely hike but don’t have much time.
Seneca Creek State Park’s crowning jewel is, arguably, the 90-acre Clopper Lake, a gorgeous body of water framed by trees. While swimming and wading are not permitted in the lake, kayaking and boating offer a fun way to explore and fishing allows for quiet time on the shore. However, follow the short, sweet, and easy Clopper Lake Shore Trail for some of the best water views in the park.
Tallying 3.7 miles, the scenic trail usually takes less than 90 minutes to hike. Despite minor obstacles including roots jutting out of the ground and muddy spots after it rains, the path is kid and dog-friendly. Pups must remain on a leash. Benches along the trail make it easy to take a breather or sit back and soak up the views.
Clopper Lake Shore Trail predominately loops around the lake, promising breathtaking water views for most of the journey. You’ll also stroll through the woods, with towering trees that offer plenty of shade during the warmer months, and over an enchanting footbridge. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including turtles sunning themselves, and herons and ducks on the water. Because the trail is so easy, it can get busy, so expect to run into other hikers and bikers, too.
If you have time, explore more of Seneca Creek State Park. A full menu of family-friendly amenities includes playgrounds, a nature play space, picnic tables, a disc golf course, and several historic sites. Regularly check the park’s website for the latest programs and events, such as nature hikes.
Find more information about Seneca Creek State Park, as well as the current entrance fee, on the official website of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
