This Pristine Inland Beach In Maryland Will Make You Swear You’re On The Coast

When asked to think of the beach, I’m willing to bet most Marylanders would conjure up an image of Ocean City. And of course, our Atlantic coastline is an incredible stretch of country to explore, particularly if you’re a fan of tequila. But one of Maryland’s most interesting geographical features, the Chesapeake Bay, just so happens to carve its way up through the state, creating a number of incredible inland beaches that many probably wouldn’t even consider when trying to plan their next beach day. But the beautiful Hammerman Beach at Gunpowder Falls State Park is beckoning, and this spot is bursting with atmosphere - so much so that you may even forget you’re technically inland as soon as you settle down to spread out the towel!

Hammerman Beach is a spectacular little sandbar stretched across the Gunpowder River in Northern Maryland. On a hot day, the water is cool and bright, and perfect for swimming…

…Or bringing your kayak (or canoe) and making a few laps. The river mouth feeds down into the Chesapeake, meaning you could conceivably make it all the way to Annapolis if you were so inclined!

The picturesque coastal grasses and dunes drain the stress out of the day and are the perfect spot to stop for a picnic.

Of course, Gunpowder Falls State Park is massive, so if you decide you feel like hiking up to shelter in the shade of the woods, there’s a river to follow and some incredible sights to see.

Just around the river bend, you’ll find the Marshy Point Nature Center! Bold boaters can follow the coastline around and spend some time exploring all the wetlands have to offer.

But make sure you make it back to the beach to catch the sunset!

Gunpowder Falls State Park is Maryland’s largest state park, so be sure to check out our guide to a multi-day adventure while you’re here!
