The 5-Mile South Branch Patapsco River Trail Might Just Be The Most Enchanting Hike In Maryland

Nothing beats a day spent out in the harmony of nature, wandering through forests and reconnecting with the world. Nothing, that is, except possibly doing so with a river as your companion. There are some incredible hiking trails all over the state of Maryland, but among the most scenic are the many that crisscross the Patapsco Valley State Park. This park is absolutely enormous, and with the rush that comes along with the early days of school, it can be the perfect place to escape for some much-needed solitude - a mental health reset bolstered by fresh air and the sound of the river. If that sort of experience sounds as good to you as it does to me, then the 5-mile South Branch Patapsco River Trail in Maryland just outside of Sykesville should be making your to-hike list immediately.

Although this trail is a bit off the beaten path, don’t worry - it’s solidly established and easy to follow once you’ve found it. Check it out on AllTrails if you need directions!

I entered the trailhead directly off of River Road. The path will take you down to a fork - you’ll want to turn right, away from Sykesville, to get started on the loop.

This is generally considered a moderately challenging hike. It gets particularly hilly towards the end, when you begin climbing up into the valley.

As you go, you’ll cross over small streams as they feed their way into the Patapsco. The sound of gurgling water is ever-present on this hike, especially on days after rain, which will certainly get more common as autumn creeps in!

All along the way there are small turn-offs from the main path, which will take you to the banks of the river. You can feel free to sit and snack if you need a break…

…Or you can take a dip in one of Maryland’s most remote swimming holes. I took this photo after a storm, but I promise it’s not always so muddy.

At times the path can resemble a hiking trail from an elfin storybook forest as it winds its way through the valley.

All along the river there are beautiful colors, sights, and sounds. There really is no better way to do a mental reset on a sunny day!
