The Can’t-Miss Maryland Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Stroll around a lake, over bridges, and through the woods on this can't-miss nature hike in Laurel.

I loved living in Maryland and being a quick metro ride from DC. Even in a neighborhood, life seemed to move so quickly, and getting bored was virtually impossible. As much as I thrived on the constant activity, I had those moments where I craved quiet, too. While it might seem like a pretty hefty challenge, finding those pockets of tranquility in Maryland is pretty easy, especially for those of us who like the outdoors. This can't-miss nature hike in Maryland is perfect when you need a brief reprieve from life.

Sometimes we all need a good challenge, but other times we just want to enjoy the moment, and that’s what the Cash Lake Loop Trail at the Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel offers. The 1.8-mile trail is short, sweet, and easy, and, if you’re strapped for time, it usually takes only around half an hour to complete.

When you arrive at the research refuge, look for the Visitor Center, where you’ll find a large lot with ample parking spaces. If the Visitor Center is open, pop in and grab a trail map, or download a map from AllTrails. The trailhead is right by the parking lot, making it easy to start your adventure.

Because the trail is predominately flat, the Cash Lake Loop Trail is kid-friendly. It also allows leashed dogs, but there are some spots where pups are allowed off-leash. The pretty path loops around the lake, promising stunning views of the water with floating lily pads and trees in the background.

A bridge leads over the water, offering an ideal opportunity to stop, admire the views, and snap photos of the surrounding landscapes if it's not too crowded. No matter what season you visit, you’ll be treated to some of the most beautiful natural scenery in Maryland. Keep an eye out for butterflies and bees on the wildflowers and flowers popping up between the lily pads on the lake. While the trail meanders around the lake, you’ll also travel through a wooded area, which is particularly breathtaking during the peak of fall foliage.
