North Beach in Maryland Is a Hidden Gem With Calm Bay Waters

Summer will be here before you know it! Are you dreaming of sandy beaches or calm bay waters? Well, you’re not alone – I certainly am! If you’re ready for a beach-style getaway, where you can soak up the sun and take things slow, I’ve got the perfect destination in Maryland for you. I know the Old Line State isn’t exactly an island in the sun, and palm trees aren’t native here. The good news? With a little bit of imagination and a sense of adventure, I think the sandy shoreline and calm bay waters in North Beach, Maryland, are a great place for a coastal-style escape.

It’s no wonder why locals come here for vacation. Let’s discover what makes North Beach’s waters so inviting. The best part? You get to skip the long lines at the airport for this quaint Maryland beach hideaway with lots of sunny skies and calm waters.

Discover North Beach, the “Jewel of the Chesapeake Bay”

It’s no secret that Ocean City is the hotspot for summertime fun in Maryland. Back when I was fresh out of college, I spent many days on the shores of the Atlantic. Now that I am a bit older (and wiser), I prefer a more low-key beach day. That’s where North Beach comes in. 

Tucked on the banks of the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, the town of 2,200 is known for its slow-paced island vibe. North Beach is about an hour from Baltimore and 40 miles from DC, making this underrated beach town in Maryland a great day trip destination. The walkable resort town has muted but colorful beachside cottages and vacation rentals. You won’t find high-rise hotels or condos like in Ocean City; the vibe is relaxed and simple, but that’s part of its charm.  

Known as the “Jewel of the Chesapeake Bay,” obviously, the beach is the main character here. Sharing the same name as the town, the low-key seaside escape has a boardwalk, sandy shores, and a fishing pier. There are also local restaurants and shops, as well as waterfront parks within minutes of the beach. 

This hidden gem beach in Maryland is where you’ll find locals who want to skip the crowds at neighboring Chesapeake Beach, a popular waterfront getaway. At only about a half-mile of shoreline, I don’t mind its compact size, and I like that it’s so easy to slow down in North Beach. This cool little escape invites you to take peaceful strolls along the water’s edge as you watch the boats drift on the Chesapeake Bay.   

What Makes North Beach’s Calm Waters So Inviting

When you’re called the “Jewel of the Chesapeake Bay,” it can only mean one thing—you have something special. For North Beach, that is its calm bay waters and its relaxing island vibe. There is no extra flash here; it’s a simple beach with a sandy shoreline, with colorful waterfront bungalows, brimming with coastal charm. 

If you use your imagination, I bet you could dream up crystal-clear waters, palm trees swaying in the wind, and steel drums playing in the distance—in true island-style. North Beach is like the Chesapeake Bay’s version of a low-key Caribbean island—calm, peaceful, and filled with locals. (If you know, you know.) It’s the kind of destination where flip flops and cocktails are part of everyday life. 

Best Times to Visit North Beach for Summer Fun

Although the town is small, the population swells in the summer. During peak season, from June to August, expect lively crowds, concerts, markets, and local festivals. Plus, since the weather is warmer, the fishing pier, boardwalk, and beach will be bustling with locals and out-of-towners. 

I think this bayside gem is a great destination to kick off Memorial Day weekend in Maryland. Hopefully, if Mother Nature doesn’t throw her curveball, the weather will be nice enough to boat or paddle on the calm bay or to soak up some sun on the sandy shoreline. 

For a more laid-back experience, skip the weekends and holidays. You’ll have more room to swim and relax on this secluded Maryland beach. Not to mention that the hotels will be cheaper, and the restaurants and nearby attractions will be less crowded, too. That’s a win-win in my book. 

Want to see more of the town? When you’re not on the water, stroll through the charming walkable downtown with antique shops, cute boutiques, and local markets. Or visit Wetlands Overlook Park or the Mark R. Frazer Sunrise Garden, for birdwatching and peaceful walking paths. Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to check out the sights and sounds of Chesapeake Beach. Since the towns neighbor each other, the two destinations are often packaged together.
