This Is the Most Remote Part of This Maryland State Park

It's surprising that one of the northeast's most sprawling state parks is located all around a major city, but that's one of the things that makes Patapsco Valley State Park so unique. This massive green space near Baltimore is divided into several areas, and it's the kind of place you could easily spend days exploring. The park has over a hundred trails, many of which are incredibly popular. Especially during the summer months, there will always be plenty of people looking to explore the park's waterfalls, swinging bridges, and more. That's why we always love finding a hidden gem, and we found one in the Vineyard Spring Trail. This 1.5-mile trail is considered an easy route you can tackle in less than an hour.

Many people pass right by this charming trail while exploring the popular nearby Grist Mill Trail, but keep an eye out for the sign; it's easy to miss. This 1.5-mile loop trail starts from a small parking lot and heads downhill to the nearby railroad tracks.

The tracks are one of the most distinctive sights on this trail, and the historic bridge is one of the entire park's best photo ops. You'll begin your hike by journeying through the old-fashioned tunnel, which is definitely showing its age, but that's part of the charm.

With a 275-foot elevation gain, this hike can be a little strenuous, but you won't encounter any challenging terrain. Dogs are welcome in this area, but have to be on a leash. This is a great spot to keep an eye out for the local wildlife, as it's less crowded.

This is also a must-visit spot for fans of the local flora. Because of the lower traffic on this loop trail, it has a very diverse environment. Take all the pictures you want, but leave the environment undisturbed—it's a peaceful little Eden in one of the region's busiest parks.

The loop trail will take you right back to the beginning of the route, but make sure to take some time to enjoy the scenery. This is one of the most beautiful spots in the park during all four seasons, and the odds are good you'll have the peace and quiet to really take it all in.
