This Half-Mile Trail In Maine Leads To A Waterfall And A Swimming Hole
The Cataracts Trail in Mahoosuc Public Reserved Lands offers a short, scenic hike leading to a refreshing waterfall and swimming hole.
Let's set the scene! You've got a full day to yourself. The sun is shining. Maybe there's a summer breeze or maybe it's the kind of fresh breeze that comes through on an unseasonably warm day in the fall. Either way, all you want to do is get outside! There are lots of trails to explore, but you're not quite in the mood for anything strenuous. That's when this short and sweet hike should be on your to-do list!
It might not be the most beautiful waterfall in America, but The Cataracts is simple to find, fun to enjoy, and worth every minute of the hike. Here's what to do!
The Cataracts Trail is a .9-mile route in the Mahoosuc Public Reserved Lands near Newry.
The trail begins near the small bridge at the same location where East B Hill Road crossed the Frye Brook.
The route follows blue blazes, making it easy to follow. But be sure to pay attention as you enjoy the surrounding views as no matter how clear the trail is marked it's always possible to lose track of where you are.
On a warm day, the tree cover offers a nice respite from the heat. And in the fall, these same trees offer lots of foliage views.
While the route itself is beautiful, it's the waterfall we're looking for and you won't need to travel far to find it.
After about a half-mile you'll reach The Cataracts. While not the highest waterfall in the state, the water falls into a clear pool below perfect for a dip.
That dip might be just your head. But if you like swimming remember to bring your suit to enjoy a swim. Be prepared for cold water, though!
Once you've enjoyed the views and your swim, simply head back the same way you came to return to the trailhead.
This is one lovely route and it's worth exploring in as many seasons as possible.
The Cataracts Trail can be accessed throughout the year, but we love it most in the spring, summer, and fall. The trail is part of the Mahoosuc Public Lands surrounding Grafton Notch State Park. You can learn more about the route and see a map by visiting either alltrails.com or Maine Trail Finder.
