First, let's get one thing straight. We are always advocates of getting out of the city and into nature. Not matter where you are or what's happening, getting a little fresh air is always good for the soul. But, for those of us lucky enough to be in Maine, getting into the fresh air doesn't have to mean loading up the car for a camping trip. Even if you live in one of our cities, there are places nearby that offer peace and quiet. We recently came across this spot in Portland. And, the best part is that you've probably passed it a hundred times without having any idea it was there! Read on to find out about this cool, hidden park.

The Casco Bay Bridge runs over the - you guessed it - Casco Bay!

And it connects Portland with South Portland.

But, if you take a peak underneath, you just might find that there's more than meets the eye.

From the top of the bridge, locate the ramp that leads down.

Take it to the bottom and you'll find this...

The entrance to the relatively hidden Thomas Knight Park.

It's incredible that this hidden bit of nature exists so close to the otherwise industrial feeling bridge.

But, the area beneath the bridge offers a respite from the hustle and bustle above.

And this isn't a small pocket park...

There are large grassy areas to enjoy.

As well as flowering trees and birds.

It's remarkable how quiet the park is, despite being in such close proximity to traffic.

It's lovely for a walk down the path if you only have a little while.

Or you can take your time and read about the park on the attraction marker.

And stop for a picnic or even a game of chess!

Thomas Knight Park offers all the Maine goodness of other, more obvious parks.

With the added benefit of less people and the knowledge that you've found a bit of a hidden secret!
