One Of Maine’s Newest Trails Offers Pristine Water Views And Might Be The Best Yet
Discover the scenic and beginner-friendly Clark Island Preserve trail in Maine, offering forest and water views.
If you're looking for a way to enjoy the great outdoors in Maine you'll find yourself with plenty of great options. Whether you like the forested landscape of inland parts of the state or the water views that come with coastal routes, there's enough variety to try something new each weekend. Especially when new areas are being designated for public use all the time. We love this newer trail for it's water views and the fact that it feels a bit remote without being difficult to access.
If you've spent any time looking at a map of Maine, you'll know that the coast is full of those long fingers of land that come from the mainland heading into the water. This beautiful trail, located on Clark Island about halfway between Thomaston and Port Clyde, is located on one of those little fingers.
The 1.9-mile trail leads around the island and includes both forest and water views.
The route is mostly flat, which makes this a great trail for beginners and kids. It's also great if you're just not looking for a route that's going to present a huge challenge.
In fact, this is one of our favorite walking routes.
Because Clark Island sits facing towards the Atlantic, the views are sweeping and include lots of water.
At low tide, it's fun to poke around the seaweed to find shells and small creatures. But remember to leave them where you find them. They chose this home for a reason, just like you did.
Along the way, you'll also find one of Maine's quintessential quarries.
The loop will bring you right back to the point at which you started, so you'll be able to spend most of your time taking in the surrounding beauty.
