The Little-Known Natural Wonder In Maine That Becomes Even More Enchanting In The Wintertime

Scattered throughout Maine are breathtaking natural wonders. From the coast to the mountains, there are natural features that will inspire you in every way. Houston Brook Falls, just a short drive from the towns of Bingham and Moscow, are falls that may be lesser known but are certainly bucket-list-worthy. But, don’t just add a visit to these falls during the summer months — they may be even more enchanting in the wintertime.

Houston Brook Falls is located off Route 201 near Bingham. In the summer, this is a beautiful place to explore as the 32-foot waterfall flows into a natural swimming hole.

But in the winter, these falls take on a totally new look — a frozen appearance that is absolutely stunning.

To reach the frozen falls, you will have to put in a little effort. But don’t worry, it’s not much. The hike to these falls is approximately 0.5 miles and relatively flat. In the summer, it’s a quick walk but in the winter, add a few more minutes due to snow and ice and always bundle up for the cold weather.

In fact, the trail to reach Houston Brook Falls is a fabulous destination for snowshoeing. It’s short and sweet and the payoff is well worth the effort!

Did you know that snowshoeing burns up to 45 percent more calories than walking at the same speed?

Take your time as you hike and enjoy the views. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time at the falls.

The frozen waterfall is truly mesmerizing.

And the ice creates the most unusual formations. Isn’t Mother Nature remarkable?

Because these falls aren’t as popular as others in the state, it isn’t uncommon to have the area to yourself. It’s a great winter day trip destination if you are seeking a little peace and quiet immersed in nature.

Houston Brook Falls is certainly an enchanting natural wonder in Maine during the winter months. It’s pure magic.
