Uncover the Mysterious Underground World Hiding in Maine’s Mount Tire’m

The most surprising cave hike in Maine isn't actually located deep underground - it's hiding on top of a mountain.

Maine is home to some of the most unique hikes in the United States, both within its massive Acadia National Park and beyond. One of the most beautiful hikes you can take in the Pine Tree State is to the top of Mount Tire'm, a manageable mountain hike found not far from the town of Waterford. The hike spans about 1.4 miles and is rated as moderate, so it's one of the easiest adventures you can have if you want some A-list views without pushing yourself to the limit. This destination is fairly out of the way compared to Maine's biggest state and national parks, so it's rarely too crowded—and that means you might have one of Maine's biggest hikes all to yourself. Because as you reach the summit, you'll find the most unexpected cave hike in Maine.

Mount Tire'm is home to a unique rock formation that hides a small cave network, and if you reach the top, you'll find one beautiful surprise after another. It's the type of day trip you can only find in a place as beautiful as Maine.

One of the shortest but most rewarding hikes in Maine, the Mount Tire'm trail is a moderate hike with a 577-foot elevation gain. You'll probably need good hiking boots for this trail, but you won't encounter any truly unpredictable terrain—at least, not when you're on the trail.

This trail is a hidden gem, well-known to locals but far enough away from Acadia National Park that it doesn't attract too many tourists. There's a steeper hike for about half a mile before it levels out and takes you towards the summit—but be prepared for a big surprise along the way.

Near the summit, hidden in a canopy of trees, you'll find the bear cave. This is a truly unique geological formation—a massive glacial erratic that has formed a collection of small caves hidden within the cleft of the massive boulder. It's the strangest cave adventure you'll find in Maine, and one of the easiest to access if you know about this trail.

From there, your adventure is almost complete - head to the summit and take in the view! This isn't the tallest summit in Maine, but it might be one of the most beautiful. You'll have pitch-perfect views of Bear Pond, Kekoa and Long Lakes, and the surrounding mountains. It's beautiful any time of the year, but if you get the chance to see it during the fall foliage, it's a true can't-miss hiking experience.
