Finding things to do with kids in Maine is fairly easy given that this state is so great for those who love to explore and have adventures. But, once you've done the same things over and over again, it can be hard to keep things feeling fresh and new. That's why we're always looking for spots that are so unique and fun that they can be enjoyed tons of times without getting old. And this one is great for both kids and adults! It could be described as a picture-perfect oceanfront trail that leads to the wacky Wiggly Bridge and features a forested loop. You'll find everything a Mainer would want in one place on the Fisherman's Walk in York, Maine.
This fun day out begins at York Harbor Beach and make your way toward one of the coolest bridges in America! So, head out and make your way to York. You can think of this adventure like a fairy tale hike in Maine
This trail makes its way along the ocean side and several parts of the trail wind in and out of old boat houses and cottages. This little section is perfectly quintessential Maine in every way and very charming. One of the best places to park is near the causeway that leads to Wiggly Bridge.
The Fisherman's Walk Trail is an easy 1.7-mile route that includes absolutely incredible views of the water.
Of course, during the summer is the best time to experience this trail but if you are anything like us we traveled this trail the first warm day we could in spring. This is a great way to get out under the warm sun and beat back a little cabin fever.
While we’re referring to this as a “hike,” it’s really more of a walk which means it’s great for people who want to see some of the state’s beauty, but don’t want to break a sweat.
In our experience, this is such a unique trail because not only do you get to cross a wobbling bridge but you will traverse your way from a beach on one end of the trail to a woodland escape on the other end. It truly is a diverse adventure!
You’ll find the trail maintained well and since it’s made with a mix of gravel and well-packed dirt you won’t need to navigate over any roots or other obstacles as with some other trails.
We love this trail any time of year, but it’s especially wonderful in the summer when the local flowers are abundant and beautiful!
The time will fly by as you look at the beautiful homes, the water, and the natural beauty of the state of Maine. Eventually, you’ll make your way to the causeway passing over the York River. This is the last piece of trail before you reach Steedman Woods and the Wiggly Bridge.
A suspension bridge, this wiggler spans just 75 feet. It’s almost as if it was built for kids, but adults and children alike will have a blast wobbling across the expanse. We did!
The best part is that it truly earns its name! It bounces and wiggles as you walk across! So get your sea legs ready because it is a wild ride.
You might be tempted to jump into the water from here, but that’s not allowed so keep yourself dry and plan on hitting the beach later if you need to cool off.
Once you’ve had your fill of the bridge, continue along to see the Steedman Woods.
You’ll find the trailhead by taking Route 103 to the parking area off of York Street by the bridge which is to the right. The path leading to the Fisherman’s Walk is just to the left.
After walking this trail, we can confidently say there is nothing else quite like it. It is such a unique way to get outside and enjoy the amazing scenery we have in our little ocean towns. We hope you have as much fun on this trail as we did. Make sure you have the map for the Fisherman's Walk in York, Maine, downloaded on AllTrails Plus before you go.
