It doesn't matter what season we're in, Mainers love coming up with ideas for activities to do in winter, spring, summer, and fall. That means our bucket lists are always full of things to enjoy outside. Of course, we've got our favorite hikes, beaches, and festivals but we're also trying to explore more farms and outdoor local businesses this year. Near the top of the list? This farm!
Welcome to Glendarragh Farm, located along the St. George River in Appleton.
It’s owned by Lorie and Patrick Costigan who started their operation in 2007 with 300 plants. Today, that number has increased more than ten times!
In addition to being the home of one of the largest lavender farms in the region, this farm dates back to 1822, which means it also comes with some Maine history. It was once home to animals such as cows and chickens that sustained the farmers who lived and worked here.
Today, the 26-acre farm is dedicated to lavender and they have over a dozen different varieties of the plant.
While this is considered a working farm, they invite folks to visit during their harvest season as well as planned days throughout the summer. This is a great way to learn more about the farm and about how lavender is cultivated and used.
All of the lavender that’s grown here is also dried in a post-and-beam barn. It’s then used for a variety of products such as soaps, treats and even liquor!
Many of the individual products that use Glendarragh lavender are all made locally by artisan friends and family.
That means purchasing something goes to help the local community, supporting both the farm and the artists and makers who live here.
A great way to see what they offer is by stopping into their store in Camden.
It’s open year-round and offers a way to enjoy the farm during the winter months.
The Glendarragh Lavender Farm has two locations. The farm is in Appleton and their year-round store is in Camden. The store and farm are open at varying times so it's best to check the Glendarragh Farm website to plan your visit. And be sure to check out the official Glendarrah Lavender Facebook. You can reach the farm on 207-236-8151.
Camden is a beautiful place to visit. If you can, try to plan your time at the farm for autumn when you can explore the rest of the town when it looks exactly like a Hallmark movie.
