Most People Don’t Know About This Remote But Totally Accessible Maine Island
Frenchboro Preserve on Frenchboro Long Island offers a secluded nature experience with scenic views and wildlife, accessible by ferry from Bass Harbor.
Mainers know that finding a good way to explore the outdoors isn't especially difficult. Between gorgeous forests hidden in plain sight and secret places where you can completely relax, there are plenty places to enjoy. But, what CAN be a challenge is finding someplace new - someplace undiscovered that feels a bit removed from the rest of the world. That's why we love Frenchboro Preserve, part of Frenchboro Long Island!
Note: A previous version of this article stated that camping was allowed on Frenchboro Long Island. This is not the case. Frenchboro Preserve may only be accessed on a day-use basis. Camping and fires are prohibited.
Just about 8 miles off the coast of well-known Acadia National Park you'll find Frenchboro Long Island.
And, on this island you'll find lovely, small Frenchboro.
But even MORE notably, you'll find Frenchboro Preserve!
The Preserve offers an opportunity for quiet nature observation, along with lovely seaside Maine air.
Despite having a more remote feel, the island and preserve are accessible via a one-hour ferry ride from Bass Harbor.

The island and Preserve are home to nesting bald eagles and it's also stopping point for migratory birds.
While the town includes about 65 year-round residents, most of the island feels quiet and undisturbed.
And, there are 10 miles of protected rocky shoreline with a perimeter path making it as gorgeous as Acadia National Park, but with no cars and crowds.
Once you've spent time exploring and enjoying the incredible shoreline vistas, grab a bite at the Dockside Deli before making your way back to Bass Harbor!
