As we inch closer to spring with each passing day, it's impossible to avoid thinking about the sunny days and warm breezes that are in our future. Many people say that the reason to live in Maine year-round is the reward of these coming few months and I have to say I agree. While we've been lucky enough to have some lovely spring-like days this winter, there's nothing like that first REAL summer afternoon. To help you prepare, we've compiled a list of some great outdoor dining options. Because, if that first summer day is great, enjoying it outside with a meal and a beer is even better!
1. Portland Lobster Company, Portland
The only thing better than the view at Portland Lobster Company are the lobster rolls. And, the only thing better than the lobster rolls is the summertime live music on the deck. Head here for some typical Maine seafood or just enjoy drinks while dancing under the stars. Keep in mind that they're closed for the season until May, so you have a few months to practice your dance moves! Visit them at: 180 Commercial Street, Portland / 207-775-2112
2. Mine Oyster, Boothbay Harbor
Don't let the name fool you. Mine Oyster is more than just the delicious oysters. You can enjoy a full menu that you'd expect at any restaurant this popular. The three outdoor seating areas are perfect for looking out over the harbor while you enjoy everything from lobster mac and cheese to chowder. And, the service gets top ratings as well. Visit them at: 16 Wharf St, Pier 1, Boothbay Harbor / 207-633-6616
3. Three Tides and Marshall Wharf Brewing Company, Belfast
If you're in Belfast on a sunny day, stop into Three Tides for some outdoor drinks and great food. And, as a bonus, you can grab a delicious growler of their fresh brewed beer. The restaurant has both an entree and a tapas menu, perfect if you're looking for some casual time outside. If it's a chillier day, don't be scared! They have an awesome fire pit to keep you warm. Visit them at: 2 Pinchy Lane, Belfast / 207-338-1707
4. Federal Jack's Brew Pub / Kennebunk
The second-floor deck makes Federal Jack's a must-visit on a nice day. View out over the harbor make for great scenery and the brews will keep you happy and full long after the sun has set. This is a beer lover's place for sure, but the food is a nice complement. Visit them at: 8 Western Ave, Kennebunk / 207-967-4322
5. Marriner's Restaurant, Camden
The outdoor seating at Marriner's looks out directly over the harbor, which is enough for me. But, if you go to restaurants for the food, you won't be disappointed either! This place serves breakfast all day, which is awesome considering their blueberry pancakes are incredible. They even serve vegan sausage! If you stop by for lunch, you'll be happy with just about anything. Marriner's is hailed by some as the last affordable place to eat in Camden. Check it out and see for yourself. Visit them at: 35 Main Street, Camden / 207-236-4949
6. Mainely Meat BBQ, Bar Harbor
A list of outdoor dining in Maine could easily just include waterfront seafood joints, but that would be boring. So, we give you Mainly Meat in Bar Harbor. Close enough to the water to keep you happy, but enough of a departure from seafood to appeal to the landlubbers. Mainely Meats made its way on our list for their perfectly downhome backyard, featuring afternoon live music and casual vibes. If you're really hungry, order the max plate - a heaping portion of chicken, ribs, shredded pork and sausage, along with three sides. Oh! And it's right next to Atlantic Brewing Company if you want to make a day of it. Visit them at: 15 Knox Road, Bar Harbor / 207-288-9200
7. Beach Pea Baking Company, Kittery
You'll often find a line at Beach Pea, but it's definitely worth the wait. From cupcakes to sandwiches, everything gets rave reviews. If you're looking for something unique, try the 68 Hours Salad with a lovely homemade ranch dressing. And, make sure you stop up on cowgirl cookies to munch on while sitting outside in their picnic area. Visit them at: 53 State Road, Kittery / 207-439-3555
8. Lakeshore House Pub, Monson
The Lakeshore House is a bit of a hidden gem. And their outside area is among the absolute best on this list. If you're in need of a break from the Appalachian Trail, head here for some cold beers and a perfect burger. It is loves by visitors and locals alike. Oh! Try the french onion soup, too! It's great. Visit them at: 9 Tenney Hill Road, Monson / 207-997-7069
9. The Looking Glass Restaurant, Bar Harbor
The Looking Glass is part of the Bluenose Inn, but don't write it off as a hotel restaurant just yet. One trip to the outdoor deck and you'll realize that this isn't your run-of-the-mill place in a hotel. The ambience is great and you'll enjoy the view on a summer day as well as the fire-pit on a chilly fall night. They serve both dinner and breakfast, so stop by for both. Visit them at: 90 Eden Street, Bar Harbor / 207-288-5663
10. The Great Lost Bear, Portland
A unique pub in Portland, this place is a bit off the beaten path if you tend to stick to the Old Port. Check it out for an awesome beer list and to try (or at least watch someone else try!) the Almighty Cheesus Burger. This burger wedged between two grilled cheese sandwiches is nothing if not unique. The outdoor seating area is super summery. Visit them at: 540 Forest Ave, Portland / 207-772-0300
