1. Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area Nature Trail

Located about 25 miles west of New Orleans along the south shore of Lake Maurepas, this 103,000-acre Wildlife Management Area features a 0.5-mile-long nature trail that will lead you through the cypress tupelo swamp. Birdwatchers will especially love this trail, as the area is home to countless species of birds including many bald eagles. The trail is located off of Hwy. 51 just north of Peavine Road.

2. Bonnet Carre Spillway Trail

While it’s not a swamp per se, the stunning scenery earns this trail a spot on the list. Located in St. Charles Parish, this trail is roughly five miles long and used primarily as a biking trail, although pedestrians on foot are more than welcome to use it as well You’ll have some lovely water views along the way, so be sure to bring your camera.

3. Barataria Preserve

There are too many trails to list at this picturesque preserve! Located in Marrero, Barataria Preserve has dozens of boardwalk and gravel trails that will lead you through the bayous and swamps for an incredible view of some of Louisiana’s natural scenery. Wildlife enthusiasts will love the trails here, as it’s common to see alligators, snakes, turtles, birds, and all the usual swamp critters.

4. Lake Martin Loop Trail

Located in the Crawfish Capital of the World (Breaux Bridge), Lake Martin is a beautiful swampy scene that you just need to see to believe. From tall cypress tress to sunbathing gators, you’ll see it all along this picture-perfect trail.

5. Lake Chicot Loop Trail

Louisiana’s largest state park is a truly incredible nature trail that encircles Lake Chicot that’s perfect for the outdoor adventurer. The 20-mile hiking trail includes several primitive campsites along the way, so you can make a weekend out of it while you traverse the rolling hills and take in the beautiful landscape.

6. BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

Not only does this 103-acre facility have over a mile of gravel paths and boardwalks that will take you on an epic journey through the cypress-tupelo swamp and beech-magnolia forests, the 9,500-square-foot nature center is also filled with live animal exhibits, artifact displays, and photographs that make this a great attraction for families.

7. Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Tucked away in Monroe, this 4,200-acre wildlife refuge has a beautiful nature trail that offers simply delightful scenery on a beautiful day. The lake is studded with cypress and tupelo trees and surrounding swamps are filled with wildlife. The mile-long trail also features a 400-foot pier that offers a wonderful view of this gorgeous area.

8. Tickfaw State Park Trails

At Tickfaw State Park, visitors can enjoy strolling through four different ecosystems on the miles of boardwalk trails. You’ll be able to experience a cypress-tupelo swamp, a bottomland hardwood forest, a mixed pine/hardwood forest, and the Tickfaw River.
