The Sandstone Trail clocks in at almost 28 miles, making it one of the longest hiking trails in Louisiana.
It's a popular trail for ATV adventures and mountain biking, too.
Whether you choose to ride or hike the trail, you're in for some fairly steep sections.
One of the perks of this being a multi-use trail is that the trail is much wider than many of the other trails within the Kisatchie. Not only is it easier to follow the trail, but a wider path is also great for not having to trek through overgrown areas and all the potential critters that you often see on these primitive trails.
As the trail name suggests, the majority of the trail is sand.
It's not as strenuous as, say, walking on the beach, but you'll definitely be getting a nice calf workout in.
The trail meanders through the longleaf pines...
...through dried-up creek beds...
...and even passes by a few little streams.
You'll want to bring your own water or have a filter, though.
Pets are welcome, just make sure you keep them leashed.
Not only is it helpful to keep your pup on a leash for other hikers, but you never know when you'll come across a wild animal. Wild horses, deer, and even black bears all call the forest home, and you wouldn't want your pup to come snout to snout with one of these wild animals.
Camping is allowed on the trail, so feel free to pitch a tent and spend a night under the stars.
Just make sure you pack out everything so that future generations can enjoy the trail in the same way you did.
