Thousands of Hummingbirds Are Migrating Through Louisiana This Spring

Hummingbirds migrate to Louisiana in the spring, and you can attract them with feeders filled with sugar water.

When do hummingbirds come back to Louisiana? Hummingbirds make two migratory journeys every year: one in the fall and then again in the spring. Their spring migration is about to be underway, and, luckily for us, hummingbirds will be coming to Louisiana as soon as they make their way further north for the breeding season across the United States and into Canada. We recommend picking up one of the best hummingbird feeders you can buy in order to get flocks of beautiful hummingbirds in Louisiana to visit you. Here’s everything you need to know if you’d like to attract these colorful little creatures to your yard.

Measuring anywhere between 3 and 5 inches in length, hummingbirds are the smallest birds on the planet. Despite their small size, they pack a powerful punch in the beauty department, displaying a beautiful array of colors and different plumage types.

These fascinating little birds don’t migrate in flocks like other species of birds, and they can travel for up to 500 miles at a time. That's right, they're intrepid and motivated travelers! Hummingbird migrations are generally motivated by the weather and food supplies, which might explain why they've been changing as the weather in North America has warmed.

One of the most common hummingbirds found in Louisiana is the ruby-throated hummingbird, pictured below. True to its name, it features a beautiful, bright red flourish on the bird's throat. While there are several different species that you could come across while scouting hummingbirds from your porch, but ruby-throated hummingbirds are by far the most common. You'll be lucky if you see any other species, actually. And they all have stunningly different colorings, so keep your eyes peeled and your camera close by.

From mid-March through the beginning of April, thousands of hummingbirds will be making their flights back from spending the winter in Central America and Mexico. This is a typical migration pattern, but it has been happening even earlier than usual because of the warmer weather in many parts of North America.

A very adorable fact about hummingbirds is that they often come back to a feeder that they've been to before, so the hummingbirds you see outside your house may be the same ones that have been visiting you for years. True bird friends! My favorite fun fact about hummingbirds is that a group of hummingbirds is called a charm. How perfect!

If you want to attract them, now is the perfect time to put some feeders up around your yard for the hummingbirds in Louisiana for the 2026 season. Nothing attracts these creatures like fresh food. All you’ll need is some white granulated sugar and water. Mix one part sugar to four parts water, and you’ve got the perfect nectar to attract these colorful birds during the timeframe of the hummingbird migration in Louisiana.

There's a lot of speculation that adding red dye to the nectar can actually be harmful to the birds, and you can learn all about hummingbirds from Bird Watcher's Digest. Skip the dye; just go with a sugar/water mix. And keep your eye out for all the bird friends that come along the way!

While these hummingbirds are a magnificent way to celebrate spring, there are plenty of other ways to get in tune with nature. Head over to our itinerary planner for ideas!
