To get to Rosedown Plantation, follow US 61 north to La 10. The address is 12501 Highway 10, St. Francisville.

The home was constructed in 1835 by cotton planters Daniel and Martha Turnbull.

The home is more than 8,000 square feet and is situated on 371 acres.

The Turnbulls were both independently wealthy and only increased their wealth after their marriage.

Their lavish lifestyle declined significantly, however, when Daniel died in 1861 and the Civil War ravaged their land.

The home stayed in the Turnbull family until 1955, when it was sold to Catherine Underwood.

Ms. Underwood undertook a $10 million restoration of the plantation, returning the gardens to their former grandeur.

In 2000 the Louisiana Office of State Parks purchased the home to create an illustration of plantation life for visitors.

The gardens are one of the most striking aspects of the plantation, filled with azaleas, camellias, and some rare varieties of plants.

There are eight white marble Italian sculptures that accent the gardens, which are close approximations of the original 12 sculptures the Turnbulls installed in 1851.
