1. Giant Bamboo Trail
- Location: Frenchtown Conservation Area, Greenwell Springs
- Length: 1.5-mile loop
- Need to Know: There is no fee to enter the conservation area. The trailhead begins on the west side of Frenchtown Road. Dogs are not allowed.
Hiking the Giant Bamboo Trail is like taking a stroll through a fairytale. Along a portion of the trail is a section of giant bamboo—an unexpected sight in. Oklahoma—that towers above and across the path, creating a magical feel like one you'd find in a fairytale. On the other side of the bamboo forest is a picnic shelter and access to the Comite River, which connects to the Hardwood Forest Loop for a longer hike.
2. Dogwood Nature Trail
- Location: North Toledo Bend State Park, Zwolle
- Length: 1.5-mile loop
- Need to Know: There's an admission fee to this state park. However, there is no charge for those ages 62 and older or three and under.
Located on the Toledo Bend Reservoir, one of the largest and most picturesque man-made reservoirs in the country, surrounded by hills and forest, North Toledo Bend State Park offers a variety of outdoor activities throughout its 900 acres. It also has some of the best views in Louisiana! Navigating is easy as you take a stroll along the well-maintained and sandy Dogwood Nature Trail, which winds through the forest and down to the reservoir. What hikers love about this spot is the scenery and how peaceful it is, often finding that they are the only ones on the trail.
3. Hippie Point Trail
- Location: South Toledo Bend State Park, Anacoco
- Length: 1-mile loop
- Need to Know: This Louisiana state park charges $3 per person. However, there free admission for those ages 62 and older or three and under.
Located approximately 50 miles south of North Toledo Bend State Park, South Toledo Bend State Park is situated on bluffs that overlook Toledo Bend Reservoir. One of the best and easiest ways to explore the park is on the Hippie Point Trail, which loops through the Hippie Point peninsula and passes through a forest of tall hardwood trees, offering stunning views of the reservoir and its islands. This is also an uncrowded and peaceful trail, perfect for those seeking solitude.
