Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center offers stunning swamp views, diverse wildlife, and family-friendly trails in Baton Rouge.

There are tons of trails peppered throughout the state, which makes it easy for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy a day out and about. If swampy views are what you seek, then look no further than the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, where you’ll be met with some of the most stunning scenery in the state.

Established in 1997, the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center was the first nature conservation-based park opened by the Recreation and Park Commission in Baton Rouge (more commonly known as “BREC”).

Great for families with kids of all ages, you’ll want to begin your adventure by visiting the main exhibit building, a massive 9,500-square-foot building.

Inside, you’ll find several live animal exhibits and displays about the park’s ecology, wildlife, plants, and more.

Fun fact: it’s home to the largest public display of vintage Louisiana duck decoys in the state!

Next, it’s time to hit the trails.

Both gravel and boardwalk trails run through over a mile of the park’s swamps and forests.

You’ll be surrounded by beech-magnolia and hardwood forests and a beautiful bald cypress-tupelo swamp.

There are several benches and hidden areas around the trail, perfect for stopping for a moment to admire the view and maybe do a little wildlife viewing.

The park is home to countless turtles, snakes, rabbits, possums, as well as hundreds of migratory birds, so keep your eyes peeled!

Admission to Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is $3 for ages 18-64, $2 for ages 3-17, and free for those 2 and younger.

Hours of operation:
