The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Kentucky
This 3.2-mile out-and-back trail near Brandenburg, Kentucky, is ideal for a Valentine's Day adventure. It has amazing waterfall views and is generally considered easy, perfect for conversation.
Hiking may not be the most traditional Valentine's Day activity, but sometimes it's best to break the mold. If you've had enough candlelit dinners, couples' cooking classes, or at-home movie nights, consider a Valentine's Day hike. It's a low-cost way to get some steps in, enjoy time in nature, and spend quality time together. Some of my best and deepest conversations have happened on a hike; it seems like my brain works better in the fresh air. The Buttermilk and Emmert Falls Trail is a scenic 3.2-mile out-and-back trail near Brandenburg, Kentucky, perfect for a Valentine's Day adventure.
This romantic trail is part of Riverfront Park, a 15-acre park nestled along the banks of the Ohio River. The trail starts near River Road and runs southeast along Flippins Run Creek. Trail highlights include two beautiful waterfalls, Buttermilk Falls and Emmert Falls. Where the Buttermilk Falls path meets the primitive trail to Emmert Falls, there is an incredible ancient Osage Orange tree. Additionally, hikers note that they often see wildlife on the trail, like deer, toads, and woodpeckers. Doesn't an afternoon full of stunning forests, wildlife, and waterfalls sound like the perfect Valentine's Day adventure?
The Buttermilk and Emmert Falls Trail is generally rated easy and popular for hiking, mountain biking, and running. It is open year-round and relatively flat, with no significant elevation changes, making it perfect for relaxed chatting.
Much of the trail is wide and paved, but portions are primitive dirt paths. Leashed dogs are welcome. Hikers also note that there are benches, tables, and bathrooms along the trail. At Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area, visitors can enjoy amazing views of the Ohio River, camp, fish, and more. The Meade County History Museum displays interesting artifacts from the area's past, including prehistoric times.
