Kentucky's natural beauty is well known. Our state is home to some of the most incredible hiking trails and natural wonders in the country; places outdoor enthusiasts from all over come to Kentucky to experience.

From epic mountains to deep caverns, incredible rock formations to dazzling lakes, Kentucky pretty much has it all.

But old-growth forest in Kentucky? That's a horse of a different color -- but one you'll find in Harlan County.

Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve protects 3,124 acres of old-growth and second-growth forests. As one of 13 large old-growth tracts remaining in the eastern United States, Blanton Forest is a diverse ecological treasure.

Many of the trees are 3-4 feet in diameter, towering 100 feet above the forest floor. Several trees have been dated to the late 1600s, in fact.

As a result, the hiking in this glorious Kentucky forest is spectacular; its tree canopies and verdant greenery look offering an experience that's straight out of a Tolkien fantasy.

In addition to harboring the oldest trees in the state, the preserve is also home to some truly fascinating animal species, including the American black bear!

This hidden forest is even home to (of course) a cave! Intrepid explorers can access the Sand Cave via a loop trail that ventures deeper into the Watts Creek and Big Branch watersheds of this Kentucky forest.

Kentucky is a state whose natural beauty will truly take you by surprise. Even those of us who are privy to its prowess, are still surprised by just how beautiful the Bluegrass is.
