This Kentucky Landscape Turns Into a Serene Frozen Wonderland During Winter
Cumberland Falls in the winter takes on a whole new look with frozen tree limbs, sub-temperature mist, and snowy walkways for a magical Kentucky adventure.
The changing of seasons can be such a beautiful experience when you fully embrace each time of the year. One of the things I like to do is chase some waterfalls in Kentucky when the temperatures get low. Seeing frozen waterfalls takes the magical experience and freezes it so stunningly that it is always a good adventure. Today, I want to highlight a popular spot you may not have considered exploring in the cold. Cumberland Falls in the winter offers some amazing scenery that you can only see during the colder months, so pack your coat and let's hit the road to see this irresistible waterfall.
Cumberland Falls is known as the Niagara Falls of Kentucky and is undeniably beautiful. For this reason alone, it is a popular tourist spot. However, there is something else that makes this waterfall one-of-a-kind: the moonbow. In the right conditions, this is one of the only places in the world where you can see a rainbow coming off the falls in the twilight hours. If you can catch one of these moments, there is nothing quite like it.
Another time when this waterfall can really shine is during the wintertime. It can be rare to see the mighty flow of Cumberland Falls completely freeze, but the landscape around it certainly changes drastically. The white rush of the falls matches the grayscale skies on a cold wintery day and the frozen branches along the riverbank.
Cumberland Falls is one of those very accessible waterfalls that everyone can enjoy. From the parking lot, it is a short walk to the overlook, so you don’t even have to do any hiking to witness this amazing natural phenomenon. Some of the paths may be closed due to icy conditions, but there are many ways to see the waterfall, so it will never be a wasted trip.
Cumberland Falls State Resort Park has many trails to take advantage of during your visit, too. Take a stroll along the river and watch the transformation to an icy road during larger cold snaps. Take a couple of hikes to see other waterfalls or have a pleasant moment in the forest. Even a hike among the trees can be transformed into a magical winter wonderland with a little bit of snow.
Even if you have witnessed this stunning waterfall in Kentucky, Cumberland Falls in the winter is a wholly different experience. Seeing the cool mist pepper the trees with ice, the rocky shore of the river freezes over, and the mighty flow of the waterfall makes any trip worth it.
