The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Kentucky for an Outdoor Adventure

There are plenty of dog-friendly hikes in Kentucky where you and your four-legged best friend can go on an outdoor adventure together. From short and sweet paved trails to rugged, epic trails where you both are scrambling to reach new heights, we've collected some of the best dog-friendly trails in Kentucky to add to your bucket list this year.

1. Bridges to the Past

• Location: West Point, Kentucky
• Length: 2.3 miles
• Difficulty: Easy

There are sections of this trail that are private property, so staying on the trail is very important. The hike is a beautiful journey through a part of Kentucky’s history—it follows the old L&N Turnpike. Each of the three stone bridges you’ll come across dates back over 150 years!

2. Iroquois Park Loop

• Location: Louisville, Kentucky
• Length: 3.3 miles
• Difficulty: Easy

This fun little loop trail in Louisville is just perfect for you and your pup to enjoy. The trail takes you all around the park, and it’s typically not very crowded, which is a win-win for us. Deer are a common sighting here, so be sure to keep your dog on a leash so they don’t run off after them.

3. Hematite Lake Trail

• Location: Cadiz, Kentucky
• Length: 2.3 miles
• Difficulty: Moderate

You’ll find this dog-friendly trail tucked away in the Hematite Basin. The loop trail takes you around the beautiful Hematite Lake, one of my favorite lakes in the state. The area is named for the high concentration of hematite, a natural mineral that gives the rocks that iconic crimson tint. 

4. Elm Lick Trail

• Location: Shepherdsville, Kentucky
• Length: 5 miles
• Difficulty: Moderate

Clocking in at five miles, this loop trail in Kentucky is ideal for longer outings with your dog. The first .2 miles are on a fire road, but you’ll quickly hike into the woodlands and be surrounded by a forested setting. This is one trail you might not want to be the first hiker of the day for. If you are, grab a stick so you can knock down any potential spider webs.

5. West Pinnacle Trail

• Location: Berea, Kentucky
• Length: 3 miles
• Difficulty: Moderate

This out-and-back trail is considered a moderately challenging hike, but the views are worth it! You’ll encounter some steep sections and even some rock scrambling as you ascend, so make sure you’ve got some trusty hiking boots. The views of the valley are positively dreamy!
