There is no shortage of unique things to do in Kentucky, but the Bluegrass State is now home to a brand new feature that is truly one-of-a-kind. Larger-than-life giants have invaded Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest, and we've never seen anything quite like them. The family of three giants was constructed by a world-renowned artist, and visitors are already enamored with the quirky attraction. These incredible giants are now living in a Kentucky forest - and you'll also want to see them for yourself.
Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest is located south of Louisville and offers acre upon acre of natural beauty to explore. Spring is a fantastic time to visit, as you'll find blooming trees and wildflowers, active wildlife, and a welcome break from everyday life throughout its 16,000-acre property.
Bernheim has long been a favorite destination for Kentuckians, and it's actually celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. There are many special events planned, but the GIANT surprise is now ready for everyone to experience.
Renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo and his crew have completed an incredible family of giants, who now reside in the Bernheim Forest. Called "Forest Giants in a Giant Forest," these whimsical sculptures beautifully combine art with nature.
The family of three - a mother with a daughter and son - were built on-side using building materials that were intended to be thrown away, so the sculptures also demonstrate that trash and waste can be valuable resources, and even turned into beautiful works of art.
The process has taken weeks to complete, and many visitors have been lucky enough to see these artists in action.
The Giants are built to last 3-5 years, mostly depending on the weather. While they are built to handle interaction with visitors, it's important to remember to be respectful, as they are works of art with the purpose of conservation.
In this photo, you can get a better idea of the actual size of these larger-than-life giants. They make for a great photo op and add even more fun to an already exciting place to visit in Kentucky.
The details and personality in each sculpture are remarkable and evoke fantasy-like imagery from a children's book. The mother giant's face is shown below, as it was still in the process of being built.
As spring arrives in Kentucky, now is a great time to visit Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest. You'll experience wildflowers, blooming trees, exciting hiking trails, and three new, playful giants who call this beautiful forest home.
The Forest Giants at Bernheim Arboretum are a welcome addition to this incredible Kentucky destination, and with a lifespan of 3-5 years, you'll want to get there soon and see them for yourself.
