Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Kentucky That’s Perfect for Summer

Considered one of Kentuckys best-kept secrets, this forested trail pairs perfectly with a refreshing swim in the lake.

Summer in Kentucky means, sometimes desperately, finding ways to stay cool. The combination of heat and intense humidity can tempt us to stay indoors all season long, but there's not much fun in that. The next time you're feeling inspired to spend some quality time outdoors and brave the heat, I've found a perfect solution: a shaded trail just a stone's throw away from a refreshing dip in the lake. Here's more on why Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park deserves a spot on your summer itinerary.

Established in 1954, Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park measures 863 acres and is surrounded by dense forest. It's perhaps most famous for its centerpiece lake, a 56-acre reservoir that's perfect for leisurely paddles. If you're planning to visit in the summer, I can think of no better adventure than a scenic stroll along the lake followed by a dip at one of the designated swimming beaches.

One of the best trails for this is the Pennyrile Lake Trail, a 2.3-mile loop that takes about one hour to complete. There's very little elevation gain, and the trail is well-marked, making it an approachable adventure for all ages. Most of the trail offers serene views of the lake, but there are a few other points of interest, too, such as an enchanting footbridge and a picturesque waterfall.

This lovely variety is what makes the hike such an enjoyable experience. To top it all off, you can take a dip in the beautiful lake for the ultimate post-hike cool-down. There's a designated swimming beach open between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The beach is small, but it's beautiful, and thanks to a gently sloped entry, it's the perfect option for even young swimmers.

For other ways to explore the water, you might consider renting a canoe or a paddleboat for the afternoon. This gives you a new perspective of the park and an even more immersive experience of the area's rich biodiversity.

One thing to note: While the trail is easy to navigate, it can become extremely slippery after rain, especially on the staircase section towards the end of the trail. Be sure to bring your sturdiest hiking boots so you feel adequately prepared.
