There are many places throughout Kentucky that you'd be surprised others haven't heard of. Your favorite restaurant, hiking trail, or getaway destination may be well-known to you, but many in our state still do not know they exist. This story can be told about many Kentucky waterfalls. The aptly-named 76 Falls in Kentucky, tucked into Lake Cumberland, is one of the most magnificent examples. If you're a frequent visitor of the lake and waterfall, then you know its beauty and the stories that come along with it, but many Kentuckians never knew this incredibly beautiful waterfall ever existed.
Lake Cumberland is a massive man-made lake that spans six counties in Kentucky. With a body of water that covers 65,530 acres, there are bound to be tucked away places, some that have been discovered, and some that have not.
One spot that is both famous and well-loved is hidden in a cove of the lake and features a stunning waterfall. 76 Falls is known by those who frequently visit the lake, but this waterfall may not be as popular with those who haven't visited the area. The scenic falls and the surrounding cove are definitely picturesque, and they also come with quite a few stories.
First off, the name 76 Falls does not come from its height. It's believed that the waterfall is named after the nearby town of Seventy Six, which was established in the 1800s. As you can tell from the photos, this spot on Lake Cumberland makes for a great gathering point and relaxing place to drop anchor and cool off. Many also enjoy seeing the falls from this vantage point, as you truly get a sense of its size, and when it's rushing, its power.
When you do visit, it is definitely important to remember the power, and potential danger, of the waterfall and the rocky cliffs that surround it. There have been a few fatalities from accidents in this spot, so remember to respect the natural beauty from a safe distance.
As you can see from the photo below, there are places around the falls where you can access them by car and foot. Off Kentucky 3062, you'll see a paved pull-off where you can park. Near the parking lot, you'll find a shelter and fencing around the overhang for safety.
That spot on its own is not the best for viewing the falls, but there are a few different designated trails and overlooks reachable from here where you can get a good look. Always watch your footing and exercise caution when hiking around this area, which does tend to change drastically with the weather and season.
If you decide to just stay near the shelter, the view isn't all that bad. In the middle of summer, the water is often filled with boats and those enjoying the lake and waterfall. This area has been known as a popular partying spot over the years, which led to issues with behavior and litter, but things have seemed to calm down in recent years.
If you're lucky, when you first discover 76 Falls on Lake Cumberland, you won't be met with a crowd. This naturally stunning waterfall and cove are definitely worth seeking out as one of the most picturesque in Kentucky.
