Explore the Most Secluded Area of Wilson State Park on This Hidden Gem Trail
Wander through peaceful woodlands and soak up lake views as you trek this hidden gem trail at this popular Kansas state park.
When life gets hectic, nothing is better for my mental health than a peaceful stroll or hike in nature. There is something about the whistling of songbirds, hearing the soft gurgling from a stream as it flows by, and the crackling of leaves underneath my feet that soothes my soul. And don’t get me started about the sun and the gentle breeze as they kiss my face. It’s easy to find a hiking trail in Shawnee Mission Park, like South Shore East Loop, that checks all those boxes, but I’d rather find a quieter spot I could have to myself. That’s where the Dakota Trail Full Loop near Sylvan Grove, Kansas, comes in. Not only is this one of the most secluded trails in Wilson State Park, but the views are breathtaking, too.
It’s no secret that Wilson State Park is one of the most beautiful places in the Smoky Hills. After all, it’s home to Wilson Lake, the clearest lake in Kansas. Not to mention, its rugged cliffs along the 25-mile Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail make this park a standout for bikers. Many hikers flock to the Wilson Lake Loop for its breathtaking waters.
However, the Dakota Trail Full Loop is often overlooked, and it’s one of the quietest areas in the park. Do you know what that means? This trail is great if you’re seeking a remote spot to get away from the crowds. This, of course, is why I like it so much. Yes, sections of the hike are not well maintained, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the prettiest views in the park. In my opinion, that makes this peaceful hike well worth it.
From the trailhead located near the Dakota Campground, you’ll begin your hike along a packed, crushed gravel and natural surface. For the most part, the one-mile hike is easy to navigate, but there are a couple of steep sections along the way. If you plan your trip during the warmer season, watch out for ticks as you hike. It’s a good idea to wear boots and long pants to avoid the pesky insects. During warm months, applying bug spray isn’t a bad idea either.
As you hike, expect to wind through serene woodlands with views of grassy prairies, the 9,000-acre lake, and even rocky cliffs. You’ll also see the nearby campgrounds inside the park. Since there are several scenic overlooks along here, I’d recommend stopping to soak up the unbelievable views. This hidden gem trail is proof that Kansas is more than just prairie land.
As you may know, the lake is a haven for wildlife in the area, so be sure to be on the lookout for native and migratory birds as well as reptiles, deer, and coyotes. You might even get lucky and glimpse a bald eagle. Among the grassy terrain, during the warmer months, pretty little wildflowers will also be in bloom. I don’t know about you, but seeing wildflowers always cheers me up as I hike.
This is a short 30-minute trek, but if you need extra adventure, combine this hike with Cedar Trail, which is another lesser-known section of the park. Here, you will also have endless views of the tranquil lake. Both trails are kid and dog-friendly (pups must remain on leash), but if you’re a solo hiker seeking solitude, you’ll find it on these routes. If you plan your hike during the later part of the day, you can stay and watch the skies glow over Wilson Lake as the sun goes down.
Sure, the Dakota Loop isn’t jam-packed with tons of adventure, but this secluded trail in Wilson State Park will leave you with something to remember. You’ll be inspired by this peaceful hike in nature, which, in my humble opinion, makes the trek worthwhile.
