Most Iowans who have a sense of adventure have hiked or drive to the top of Pikes Peak State Park, and it's one of the nicest places in the state. Unfortunately, that means its often crowded! If you're looking for a similar overlook that's easy to get to and a little more off the beaten path, Mount Hosmer Park is the place to go.
Mount Hosmer is a hidden gem of a park located in Lansing, Iowa.
There's a steep and narrow road that will take you to the top of the mountain, but for the best experience, take one of the three hiking trails to the top.
Whether you drive or hike it to the summit, you can enjoy a walk around the top and take in the sights of the stunning Mississippi River from on top of the world!
Read the interpretive sign to learn about the river valley, and use the mounted binoculars to spot barges, wildife, and maybe even a bald eagle!
When you make it to the top, stop for a picnic lunch. If you're anything like most Iowans, you'll want to stay up here taking in the views for as long as you can!
You can find Mount Hosmer Park at N 6th St., Lansing, IA 52151. The Park's three hiking trails are named after veterans who lost their lives in combat, and there are monuments to soldiers and POWs in the park as well. This little park is one of the coolest hidden gems in the Hawkeye State!
