Discover the challenging yet rewarding Hitchcock Loop hike in Iowa's Loess Hills for breathtaking views and wildlife spotting.
If you're looking for an exciting outdoor adventure in Iowa, embark on one Loess Hills hike that will take your breath away. Tucked away near the Western border, you'll find a small town nature preserve that's sure to win your heart.
Way out West, near the Nebraska Border, you'll find the quiet and serene Hitchcock Nature Center.
Iowa's western Loess Hills are known for their unique topography, and hiking around the nature center is one way to really get in touch with this part of the Hawkeye State.
There are several short trails that will show off panoramic views, but the best hike in the park is the 6 mile Hitchcock Loop.
This is one of the more challenging hikes in the Hawkeye State, but after a steep ascent, you'll be rewarded with an absolutely amazing ridgeline that's easy to follow.
On a clear day, you can see for miles across Iowa and Nebraska thanks to the rolling hills. This is the perfect vantage point for wildlife spotting, too!
You might even catch a glimpse of a colorful cargo train making its way across the countryside. Years ago, these trains were the best way to cross the state and take in these views.
What are you waiting for? Pick up your hiking poles and hit the trail. There's no better way to get in touch with Iowa's breathtaking natural landscapes than to explore them yourself.
You can find a trail map from AllTrails right here. For more information on Hitchcock Nature Center's programs and events, visit their website.
