If you're a foodie, downtown Des Moines is the place to be on a Saturday morning. The Downtown farmer's market is arguably one of the best of its kind in the country, showing off the delicious bounty of Iowa's agricultural industry, one tomato at a time. The media agrees - Shape Magazine, Midwest Living, Parade, and others have all ranked the market as one of the best in America.
The market takes place every Saturday morning from May to October in the Historic Court District and this year it will feature 110 special vendors. Grab your market basket - here's what's blooming at the Des Moines Farmers Market.
The popular market has been around since 1975 and it draws big crowds. There's plenty of parking around on streets and in downtown garages, but you may want to allow a little extra time to park and walk to the stalls.
Arrive early for the best selection - the market is open from 7 a.m. to noon, but the best items can go quickly.
To ensure a streamlined shopping process, and find those fresh chiles faster, customers are directed through one-way paths.
You can easily elevate your cooking by shopping at the market. Farmers, growers and artisan food entrepreneurs offer fresh and delicious locally produced fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, cheese, wine and more
Shopping at the market is a way to help support Iowa's small businesses. Farmers, producers and artists from 50 counties are represented at the market.
The food is unbelievably fresh and delicious. There is nothing like a market tomato!
The Des Moines Farmer's Market has some special measures in place to keep customers and vendors safe, including added space between stalls. If you're not able to visit the market during the growing seasons, you can still enjoy items from local producers - the market also holds a Downtown Winter Farmers’ Market. Iowa also has some fantastic markets in other towns. Here are some more you should put on your list.
