As the largest wetland in the Lake Michigan watershed, The Great Marsh has an incredible amount of nature and wildlife thriving in its ecosystem. Taking the 1.4-mile loop trail around the marsh, you can see ducks, geese, and herons wading in the marsh. The Great Marsh Trail in Indiana will get you out into nature and allow you to observe an abundance of plants and wildlife along the way.
The Great Marsh Trail is an easy hike, with no changes in elevation. It’s recommended to wear sufficient shoes, as the path can be wet and muddy at times.
As you walk along the trail, you’ll come upon the wetlands. The National Park Service began restoration of this area in 1998 after it was drained in the early 1900s.
The loop takes you along the wetlands, which are surprisingly beautiful. The return of plants and birds indicates that a healthy ecosystem is returning to the area.
The marsh now thrives with flocks of ducks, blackbirds nesting, and green herons during migration season. Birds have found their home in the restored habitat, where nature now flourishes year-round.
There’s plenty to see on your walk. However, it’s important to watch out for ticks and poison ivy along the edges of the trail
Springtime brings beautiful blooms that brighten up the prairie. Plants and flowers now thrive in this new environment.
While it might seem that a marsh isn’t anything special to see, it’s actually quite a scenic and an interesting hike to take. From birdwatching to observing plants, it’s a fun walk in nature that’ll leave you feeling refreshed.
