One Of The Oddest Geological Wonders Is Located Right Here In Indiana

Shoals, Indiana, is home to a unique and fascinating geological wonder.

Indiana is full of geological wonders - from our incredible and unique dunes to our breathtaking sandstone cut ridges and canyons, there are so many things that will steal the breath from your lungs. One of the most fascinating geological wonders, however, can be found in Shoals, Indiana, and it's one of the strangest naturally occurring structures in the country. This strange geological wonder in Indiana is one of a kind in the Hoosier State.

Considered the unofficial mascot of Shoals (and of the local high school), the Jug Rock is a geological wonder that everyone in Indiana should experience up close, at least once in their lifetime.

Jug Rock is approximately 60 feet tall and 20 feet wide and is composed of millstone and sandstone. This structure is alleged to be at least 286 million years old.

This enormous natural wonder is part of the Mansfield formation, where fossil have been found dating back to the Carboniferous Period of the Earth. Jug Rock is the largest freestanding rock formation on the eastern side of the Mississippi, and is rather impressive to behold.

The intriguing shape of this rock formation is one of the coolest parts of this natural wonder. It's often referred to as a rock table formation and is puzzling since formations of this sort are generally not found in the eastern part of the country.

You can find Jug Rock (and other incredible sites like the Pinnacle) in Shoals at Albright Lane, Shoals, Indiana, 47581.
