Cool Off This Summer With A Visit To These 7 Indiana Waterfalls

Nothing screams "adventure" like summer, and nothing screams summer like spending an entire afternoon lazing beside an impressive waterfall - which is easy to do when you live in the Midwest. We have literally hundreds of beautiful hikes that lead to awe-inspiring waterfalls scattered all over the state, and there's no way you can call yourself a local if you've never explored them all! We've put together a selection of seven of our favorite waterfalls in Indiana for you to kill a hot afternoon at in the coming months; you might have heard of some of them, and others might be new to you (we kinda hope so!). Either way, exploration is strongly encouraged!

1. Big Clifty Falls

Big Clifty Falls, one of four waterfalls located in Clifty Falls State Park, is one of the most famous waterfalls in Indiana. Take a 3.4-mile loop trail to admire an impressive 60 feet of stair-step-style falls.

2. Tunnel Falls

Okay, maybe this one is cheating a little, but we don't think so. Tunnel Falls is another waterfall located on the same trail you would take to visit Big Clifty Falls. Tunnel Falls stands at an impressive 83 feet high.

3. Cataract Falls

Cataract Falls are technically two waterfalls, but since they're considered under the same moniker, we'll count them as one. Cataract Falls consists of upper and lower falls. Upper Falls is 30 feet high, and Lower Falls is 15 feet high. There is an entrance fee to gain access to the park where the falls are nestled, but it's worth it. 4. McCormick Creek Falls

Another famous waterfall in the Hoosier State means another must-see for everyone who seeks waterfalls in Indiana. Take trail #3 from the Saddle Barn to track down the falls and admire the St. Louis limestone formation that makes up the area. The falls are, predictably, located within McCormick Creek State Park.

5. Hemlock Cliffs Falls

Located in lovely southern Indiana, Hemlock Cliffs Falls is a breathtaking example of just how wonderful our home state can be. All it takes to access it is a simple, one-mile-long loop hike, and you'll be there in no time. There are absolutely beautiful canyons and rock formations all over this area, so keep your eyes peeled!

6. Williamsport Falls

Williamsport Falls is often overlooked in favor of slightly-more-famous waterfalls in Indiana, but it shouldn't be; at an impressive 90 feet high, it's the tallest waterfall in the state, and the more rain or snowmelt there's been, the more Instagram-worthy Williamsport Falls becomes.

7. Kokiwanee Falls

Last on this list but definitely not last in our hearts, Kokiwanee Falls is a seasonal waterfall that even locals sometimes don't know about! It's hidden away along the Kokiwanee Nature Preserve Trail, and the volume depends on recent snowmelt and/or storms.
