6 Hikes With the Best Sunset Views in Indiana
Lovers of sunset hiking trails, this one's for you: These six incredible hiking trails in Indiana are amazing for this time of day.
Did you know that Indiana is an awesome state for those who enjoy a good old-fashioned sunset scene? It's true - we may not have many epic mountain views around here, but that's okay; given the amazing hiking trails that weave throughout the state, we can explore our great outdoors on foot and catch the sunset while we're at it.
I've compiled a shortlist of six of my favorite hiking trails in Indiana that are perfect for a sunset hike. From stunning golden light filtering through trees to the sun sinking beyond the horizon over Lake Michigan, you can't go wrong with any of these options; they make excellent jumping-off points for those who seek an amazing new adventure with a side of twilight magic.
1. Bally Beach via Cowles Bog Trail - Indiana Dunes National Park
If you've never been to Indiana Dunes National Park, you really, really should go—and while you're there, experience a sunset like no other over Lake Michigan on the Bally Beach via Cowles Bog Trail. This breathtaking 4.6-mile adventure is rated as moderately difficult, and I agree; you'll want to wear good, sturdy shoes and pack plenty of water. The views from this hike are truly incredible. I cannot recommend it enough. To say this one is beautiful is the understatement of the year.
2. Millrace Canal Trail - Goshen
I'm not even sure where to begin about the Millrace Canal Trail, which meanders through the town of Goshen, Indiana. It's four miles long and quite easy, with most of the path being even and paved in places. Hiking this one right around sunset is so very tranquil for the soul; the way the gilded sunlight filters through the assortment of trees and foliage surrounding the hike is intensely photogenic and green. This is one of my favorite urban hiking trails in Indiana; it's awe-inspiring and definitely worth doing!
3. Potato Creek State Park Friends Trail - North Liberty
Potato Creek State Park is absolutely breathtaking, and in the spring, it truly comes into its own. At just seven-tenths of a mile, the Potato Creek State Park Friends Trail is a short-and-sweet dive into the wonder that is our incredible state parks; it can get a bit muddy, so wear good shoes. At sunset, the golden light illuminates the emerald greenery of the foliage, making for a magnificent sight you'll just have to photograph. This one is among my all-time favorite short hikes in Indiana. Best of all, it's easy - just about anyone can enjoy it.
4. Coffee Creek Short Loop - Chesterton
For this next wonderful adventure, head out to the beautiful Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve and make sure you wear shoes that you don't mind getting a bit wet (or muddy). The Coffee Creek Short Loop is a delight to hike all day long, but at the end of the day, the long shadows and beautiful light make for an idyllic twilight. This hike is 1.3 miles long, easy, and excellent for anyone looking for a short adventure in the great outdoors.
5. Lake Maxinkuckee Path - Culver
If you're hoping for a slightly longer - but not too long - hike, the Lake Maxinkuckee Path is one of the most beautiful short hikes in the state, especially around sunset. At two and a half miles long, it's a delightful example of the wonders of the Hoosier State, offering a brisk but easy adventure that the whole family will love. Watching the sunset over the lake - which is among my favorite lakes in Indiana - is second to none.
6. Hurshtown Reservoir Loop - Grabill
The wondrous Hurshtown Reservoir Loop is three miles of amazingness revolving around the gorgeous, crystal-clear Hurshtown Reservoir. It's easy and only takes about an hour unless you decide to make stops along the way. I personally recommend stopping to watch the sun disappear below the horizon, observing (and admiring) how the light glitters on the water. It's intensely photogenic, and I have no doubt you'll love it.
So, there you have them: six amazing hiking trails in Indiana perfect for sunset views and twilight delights. If you don't know where to begin, just start at number one - you'll fall head over heels in love with Indiana through and through, time and time again. If you're an avid hiker and want to step up your game, I highly recommend a (free!) trial of AllTrails Plus. It's outrageously convenient, and I don't remember what I did before I had it.
