Autumn is a special time of year, isn't it? There's something so magical about the changing of the leaves, the chill in the air, and the cool, dry breeze around this time that makes everything seem a little nicer than usual. We just so happen to be totally obsessed with fall color in Indiana, and it's pretty hard to get it wrong: it seems like everywhere you turn will be awash with color, so what better time to check out some of Indiana's state parks than now? For example, check out Shakamak State Park for the ultimate autumn experience:
About 30 miles southeast of Terre Haute, Indiana, is a small state park with a big fall color factor.
Shakamak State Park isn't enormous - it's just over one square mile in size - but what it lacks in enormity it more than makes up for in autumn splendor.
The trees surrounding the lake begin to take on hues of gold, orange, and crimson, and the reflection of the trees in the water is special to witness.
Which lake, you ask? After all, Shakamak has three; honestly, it doesn't actually matter - all of them are nothing short of splendid at this time of year.
There are plenty of campsites all over the park that you can reserve ahead of time to really immerse yourself in your surroundings.
It's the perfect escape for a long weekend - or longer. What's better than a campfire, s'mores, AND fall color? Not a lot.
Pick from more than 220 sites and choose the one that calls to you.
Check out the amazing hiking trails that weave throughout the park; our two favorites are Shakamak Trail 1, which is 3.4 miles long and rated as moderately challenging, and Shakamak Trail 4, which is 3.6 miles long and also rated as moderate.
There are seven trails altogether, though, and we recommend doing them all and choosing your own favorite!
Other options for spending a fun day or weekend at Shakamak include family cabins for rent, swimming, picnic areas, tennis and basketball courts, and so much more.
A visit to Shakamak State Park is great, but a visit to Shakamak during the fall is even better.
For more information on Shakamak State Park, including campsite reservations, hours, fees, and more, be sure to check out the official Indiana Department of Natural Resources website.
