There are over 300 state parks in Illinois, as well as recreational sites on more than 475,000 acres of land. And while each one of those places is uniquely beautiful, we happen to believe Starved Rock State Park outshines them all. You simply won't find scenery like this anywhere else in the state.
Starved Rock State Park is a wilderness area on the Illinois River in Utica.
The park is located just 100 miles southwest of Chicago, but you'll feel like you're on another planet.
Starved Rock's land has been home to humans from as early as 8000 B.C.E.
Native Americans called it home from the 1500s to the 1700s, and French explorers Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette fell in love with the area in 1673.
The park is open all year, and there's truly never a bad time to go.
The Starved Rock Visitor Center is open year-round as well.
From seasonal waterfalls to rugged canyons, this place is absolutely awe-inspiring.
If you ever have guests visit from out of state, bring them here so they can see Illinois in a whole new way.

The park's 18 canyons feature vertical walls of moss-covered stone that were formed by glacial meltwater.
The lush vegetation helps to support the abundant wildlife that makes a home here.
There are over 13 miles of trails that lead you to waterfalls, natural springs, and breathtaking overlooks.
Depending on the season, you can also enjoy canoeing, picnicking, fishing, and cross country skiing.
Starved Rock State Park is rich in both beauty and local history.
