Don’t Attempt This One Hike in Illinois Unless You’re Up for a Challenge

From poison ivy to hilly terrain, the Godwin Trail can be difficult. At almost 20 miles, this is a lengthy hike in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.

Some hikers will see this piece and snicker that this hike along the Godwin Trail in the Bald Knob Wilderness near Alto Pass, Illinois, isn't difficult at all. Even AllTrails rates it "moderate." However, this nearly 20-mile out-and-back trail has its own set of challenges. Even if it isn't the most physically difficult trail, it is taxing nonetheless. After all, with this trail, you aren't just dealing with one type of terrain and more than 1,800 feet of elevation gain through dense wilderness areas, sandy river beds, and overgrowth.

The hike outlined on AllTrails is much longer than the usual Godwin Trail hike outdoorsy folks talk about online. This is not just the 12 miler. As I mentioned, this is just shy of 20 miles and constitutes a larger part of the Bald Knob River to River Trail. What can make it particularly challenging, especially in the summer, is trail overgrowth. Many hikers cite difficulty finding trail markers or even getting down the trail at all once the grass and thickets grow over it. Try to stay on the path for this trail, as it's easy to wander onto side trails if you aren't careful. That navigation element is part of what makes this so difficult.

As if that weren't enough, some hikers warn of potential encounters with poison ivy and stinging nettles if you aren't careful. With areas of the trail frequently taken over by undergrowth, keeping your eyes out for stingy plantlife is part of the hiking challenge along the Godwin Trail. You should watch your step anyway, since this hilly trail can easily catch you off guard.

Be aware that, depending on how far you go on the trail, you may need to cross Hutchins Creek. Sometimes the creek is pretty shallow and easy to cross without getting too wet. However, if there is heavy rain, it can become much more treacherous. Keep that in mind before you head out for the day.

At the same time, you have all of the beauty of the surrounding Bald Knob and Clear Springs Wilderness areas within the greater Shawnee National Forest, too, so hikers are rewarded for the journey. From scenic vistas like that from Inspiration Point (seen above) to thick forests, river banks, and often plenty of wildlife, there is so much to see. Depending on the time of year and luck, you may see some wild turkeys, muskrats, snakes, barred owls, woodpeckers, foxes, rabbits, and plenty of other Illinoisian critters.

For avid hikers, this trail is likely no problem. Almost a walk in the park, if the park needed navigational directions. But this trail, in its entirety, is far less amenable to beginner hikers. It is a challenge with plenty of pay off—if you're willing to go the distance.
