The 6.5-Mile Hiking Trail in Illinois That Is a Fall Foliage Wonderland
Initially created to celebrate the nation's bicentennial, the Rock River Bike Path in Rockford, Illinois is now a fall foliage wonderland.
Fall foliage is an annual occurrence that borders on magical. Though it's entirely natural (and due in part to diminished sunlight and cooler temperatures), watching the landscape change from green to rusty shades of red and orange is an experience that should make us proud to live in a cooler climate. Not everyone has such a colorful autumn experience, but here in Illinois, it's never a disappointment. Today, we're going to take a virtual visit to the Rock River Bike Path, which has wowed visitors since 1976. Whether you're hiking or biking, you're going to love this adventure in the Rockford, Illinois area.
In 1976, Rockford, Illinois was abuzz with excitement. Heck, the whole nation was celebrating 200 years of independence, but locally, things were getting interesting. Concerts, a visiting king, and public art displays kept the state's biggest city outside the Chicago area in a state of festivities. To the delight of locals, a 10-mile paved path was also unveiled.
The Bike Path portion of the trail is perfect for running, hiking, biking, or picnicking, and though it's several miles long, it can be traversed in about two hours. As its name implies, the path follows a portion of the Rock River, and the views are absolutely phenomenal.
On your trek, you'll pass Sinnissippi Park and Golf Course, Shorewood Park, Martin Park, and the Winnebago County Forest Preserve. With so much greenery on the route, this hike is absolutely enchanting in the autumn.
Additional features like a rose garden and the idyllic landscape of Sportscore I - Veteran's Memorial keep the hike feeling unique and varied, and visitors have been known to budget some extra time to stop and admire the landscape. Various points of the trail brush right up against the river, providing a scenic overlook to drink in the beauty of the natural landscape.
The path will also take you past the Rockmen Guardians, a bizarre art installation of rocky sentinels that watch over the city. These strange giant stone men were installed in the late 1980s, and they've delighted visitors ever since. As the landscape changes from fall foliage to a blanket of snow, they somehow pop even more brilliantly.
The Rock River Bike Path is always a fantastic hike, but it's especially remarkable in the fall. With several parks along the route and an endless parade of trees, you'll love the various views on this route.
