This gorgeous natural pool in Illinois sits in the picturesque setting of Shawnee National Forest, in Karbers Ridge, Illinois. The approximately 280,000-acre state forest is located in the Ozark and Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois. Take a well-deserved break from life and relax at Pounds Hollow campground tucked away in the Shawnee Hills. Dive in and swim away your cares in the 25-acre natural pool at Pounds Hollow Lake for the day. Enjoy a picnic, a hike, or cast a line in the fish-filled waters. Come on, what are you waiting for?

Completed in the early 1940s, Pounds Hollow Lake is still a major draw to folks wanting to cool off and have a good time, continuing to provide opportunities for picnicking, swimming, fishing, and camping.

Today, the lake remains a wonderful place to spend a warm day in the Land of Lincoln.

One of the several lakeside picnic sites includes this one, a fine tribute to the skilled craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corpsmen in the hand-cut sandstone foundation of this picnic shelter in the picnic pavilion area overlooking the beach.

In September of 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared the Shawnee and Illini purchase units as the Shawnee National Forest.

The CCC also planted pine trees to prevent erosion and help rebuild the soil during the 1930s and 1940s.

Fishing in Pound Hollow Lake is another tradition, especially from this handy fishing pier.

Hiking is also a big reason folks visit this sprawling forest. Close to 40 interesting, winding and rugged trails allow folks to get up-close-and-personal to nature and wildlife.
