This Little Known Park In Illinois Is A Hidden Gem And It Will Take Your Breath Away
Dixon Springs State Park in Illinois offers hiking, camping, and unique geological features within the Shawnee National Forest.
With 73 state parks, it's easy to overlook some of the hidden gems in Illinois. Here's a pretty park with plenty of recreation and hiking opportunities. Check it out!
You'll find Dixon Springs State Park in the southern part of the state. It's part of the Shawnee National Forest.
This pretty 786-acre park features a small stream and, when it's rainy, several small waterfalls.
Several hiking trails take you through the forest and down shady paths. This is Pine Trail, which, along with two other trails, makes a 1.7 mile loop.
You'll see massive boulders here - the result of an ancient earthquake. In some spots, the rock walls tower 60 feet overhead.
Many of the boulders here have unique names. This is Honey Comb Rock.
Take the one mile-long Ghost Dance Canyon Trail to see even more of these unique boulders. Keep your eye out for wildlife, too. You might see deer, squirrels, rabbits and even an occasional fox.
Feel like a kid again on one of several playgrounds.
Camp overnight in the campground. You'll find spots for tents or trailer spots with electrical hookups.
