You never know what you're gonna get when exploring Idaho's diverse landscapes. From jagged mountaintops to vast, unending desert landscapes, the Gem State truly has it all. One of the lesser-known landscapes in Idaho consists of bizarre geologic formations, like those found at City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park. Known as Teepee Rocks, these cone-shaped formations make for an astonishing sight. They may be well-hidden out in a remote region of Southern Idaho, but we think you'll find that they are SO worth seeking out.
Located near the small historic town of Oakley is a landscape of strange natural wonders that you simply have to see to believe. Known as Teepee Rocks, these one-of-a-kind rock formations are definitely worth the trek.
To find Teepee Rocks, take Trapper Creek Road south out of Oakley. This long, beautiful country road takes drivers past some stunning Southern Idaho scenery, including Oakley Reservoir. Watch as the landscape transforms from flat desert to an area known as the South Hills.
Continue past the reservoir for roughly 20 miles. Keep an eye out for a fence on the side of the road where you can pull off and park your car. From here, head north up the gravel road towards the rocky cliffs and enticing geological formations.
As you get closer, the magnificence of Teepee Rocks will blow you away. True to their name, these strange rocks are shaped like cones, with a prominent point on the top of each formation. It's a pretty wacky sight, especially all the way out here.
You'll also notice the unique texture of these towering rocks. Each cone is sandy white with a rugged surface that's filled with holes and shelf-like features in all sizes. Simply put, they resemble something you'd see on Mars!
There's no official trail for exploring the area, but there are several small trails you can follow around the rock formations. It's not a very large area, but it's still fun to lose yourself underneath the shadows of these looming cone-shaped oddities.
Located way out in the remote Southern Idaho landscape, finding Teepee Rocks is definitely an adventure. Be sure to keep in mind the Leave No Trace principles and pick up after yourself when exploring the area so we can keep visiting this weird destination for generations to come.
