When you're hunting for that perfect family-friendly adventure that's exciting for both adults and kids, an Idaho rail-trail is always an excellent option. You'll find various rail-trails hiding around our state, from the massive rail-trail that spans the entire country to the beautiful Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. However, you'll definitely want to be aware of a lesser-known trail around Lake Cascade called the Crown Point Trail. Boasting scenic views of the lake, access to beaches, and tons of wildlife, you'll find adventure around every turn on this beautiful lakeside rail-trail.
Hiding in Valley County is a glorious lakeside rail-trail that takes visitors on a meandering adventure around Lake Cascade. The Crown Point Trail is perfect for hikers and cyclists of all ages, and it's worth considering for your next family outing.
To find the trailhead, turn left onto Lake Way at the north end of Cascade. The trailhead can be found at the intersection of Vista Point Boulevard. Hikers can park at the Crown Point Campground or Lake Cascade State Park (remember there is a $5 day-use fee for state parks.)
The Crown Point Trail spans a sizable section of the lake's eastern shore near the town of Cascade. It stretches for 5.3-miles out-and-back and is very flat with little elevation gain. For an easy-breezy adventure, this trail is ideal.
The trail's wide dirt path leads cyclists and hikers through a rich forest landscape. In between the trees, you'll receive glorious glimpses of the lake's glistening waters. You may just find yourself taking your time on the trail so you can enjoy every little view of the lake you come across.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for smaller trails that lead directly down to the lake's shore. Here you'll find numerous hidden beaches where you can sit and relax in front of the lake's waters. Fishing is popular along these beaches since the lake contains rainbow trout, Coho salmon, perch, and smallmouth bass.
Lake Cascade is a true beauty and wildlife also loves it! Osprey are a common sight along the Crown Point Trail and there are several nesting platforms in the area. If you're quiet enough, you may just catch a bird taking flight or a deer gazing at you through the trees.
This paved trail makes it easy to enjoy Lake Cascade's stunning southeastern shore. Whether you choose to walk it or ride your bike, you'll find that every outing on this lakeside rail-trail is something to remember.
