If you ask Idahoans from the eastern portion of the state what their favorite hike is, they'll probably say the Darby Wind Caves. This hike is universally recognized as one of the coolest and most unique hikes in all of Idaho. Not only does it take you through a beautiful canyon studded with greenery and waterfalls, but you end up at a massive, looming cave entrance that takes you inside of the canyon wall. This is the entrance to the humongous and spectacular wind cave located on the western side of the Teton Mountains.

Pictures don't quite do it justice. If you strain your eyes enough you can spot the tiny speck that is a human at the entrance for scale!

Located near Driggs, Idaho, the stunning Darby Canyon straddles the Idaho and Wyoming border.

The five mile hike starts off fairly simple and flat. The surrounding scenery is simply breathtaking and you'll be hiking through lush greenery and trees. Enjoy the tranquility of this portion of the hike before things start to get really exciting!

This hike is extremely popular among the locals and the trail is well-maintained. This is a perfect hike for families since it's not to strenuous and the scenery is constantly changing!

You'll know you're on the right path when you come to the bridge taking you over a rushing stream.

As you continue on, your surrounding will begin to change...

You'll be led into the main part of the canyon which opens up to stunning views of the canyon walls and the rocks and boulders that have fallen to the canyon's floor.

You'll be subject to some amazing panoramic views of the canyon which seems to just go on and on.

You'll pass by several small waterfalls that are the perfect place to stop and take a break if needed.

It won't be too long before the cave comes into view and you're reminded of just how small you are in comparison. It's hard to miss because it is simply massive and takes up a large portion of the side of the canyon.

This part of the hike starts to get a little more intense and you'll be following along gradually steepening switchbacks. It's definitely doable, though.

As you get closer to the cave entrance, you'll notice a beautiful flowing waterfall cascading down from the opening. Stop and take a second to experience a taste of the purest mountain water you've ever had!

The water is quite cold, but flows over a bed of rocks that are somewhat shaped like a staircase leading up to the cave. Exercise caution during this portion because it will be very slippery!

You'll realize that it's called a wind cave for good reason. The small opening to the cave creates a large gust of wind coming from within the cave. You might want to bring a light jacket or sweater for entering the cave since it maintains a pretty chilly temperature all year long.

A headlamp or any other source of light is a good thing to bring along with you since it can get to be pitch dark inside of the cave.

Inside the cave the path will become quite narrow and extreme adventurists will venture further into the cave, where it'll become necessary to army crawl through tight spots. This part is not for the claustrophobic!

These parts will definitely require the use of professional equipment and rappelling gear.

If you don't wish to venture super deep into the cave, you can simply relax at the cave entrance and enjoy the absolutely breathtaking view of the wilderness surrounding you! A view like this is the perfect reward after a five mile hike.
