This Easy 3 Mile Coastal Boardwalk Trail In Hawaii Is A Little Slice Of Paradise
The Wailea Oceanfront Boardwalk Trail in Maui offers an easy, scenic walk along the coast with stunning views and access to luxury resorts.
You will not only find some of America’s most iconic landscapes across the Hawaiian Islands but some of the best hiking trails in the world as well. While you’ll find plenty of difficult hikes across Hawaii, not everyone who lives in or visits the Aloha State is an experienced hiker. Luckily, you'll find several trails in Hawaii that make it easy to enjoy the great outdoors, including this easy oceanfront boardwalk trail the whole family will love.
Meandering from the popular Keawakapu Beach in the north past white-sand beaches and eight world-class resorts to Polo Beach in the south, the 1.5-mile out and back Wailea Oceanfront Boardwalk Trail nestled along the coast of southwest Maui is truly remarkable.
If you're fortunate enough to be staying at one of the incredible resorts in area - like the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea or the Waldorf Astoria Grand Wailea - you can step off the property and right onto to the trail.
Amateur and professional photographers alike are drawn to this stunning stretch of coastline, and it’s easy to see why.
If you look to one side, you’ll discover the manicured grounds of a luxury resort and to the other, fine, white sand and the vast Pacific Ocean.
Weather and season permitting, you might even be treated to shoreline views of breaching humpback whales, sea turtles, and the neighboring islands of Molokini, Kaho’olawe, and Lanai.
Talk about breathtaking!
Don’t be fooled by the name, though: This beachfront path, also known as the Keawakapu Beach Trail, is more concrete walkway - and even dirt path, in some sections - than boardwalk trail.
The reason makes sense, though: Sections of the trail traverse sand dunes, and on Maui, it is illegal to pave dunes.
Either way, we can’t imagine a better way to spend a leisurely morning, especially if you’re staying at one of the nearby resorts and grab a coffee to sip while you stroll the Wailea boardwalk.
Though not a hike in the traditional sense, the Wailea Oceanfront Boardwalk Trail is the perfect spot for the entire family to soak up the sun and enjoy a morning run, an afternoon walk, or a sunset stroll.
With beautiful landscaping, including a colorful collection of flora, striking ocean views, and easy access to major resorts, restaurants, as well as shopping destinations, the Wailea boardwalk is a wonderful alternative to hopping in the car, whether you’re visiting Wailea for a day or staying nearby.

There's another boardwalk trail not too far from Wailea in Maui's Central Valley. You'll find it at the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge - and it's definitely worth a visit! If you're heading to some of the other fantastic trails in Hawaii, in general, or on Maui, specifically, we recommend wearing sturdier footwear than your beach slippahs and using AllTrails+ to download trail maps for use offline, as much of Maui's backcountry - especially in Haleakala National Park - is outside of cell range for many carriers.
