In Hawaii, we enjoy an endless summer, and there are few better ways to enjoy it than with a picnic shared with loved ones. But with so many gorgeous beaches, lookout points, and green space, how do you choose the perfect location for your next picnic? Here are six ideas for the ideal picnic spot.
1) Ehukai Pillboxes
Located on Oahu’s north shore are two old military pillboxes, where service members would keep watch for incoming ships. A lone picnic table sits near the pillboxes, and it is the perfect locale for a low-key lunch. If the north shore is too far, there are two other pillbox hikes on the island – the Lanakai pillboxes on the windward coast, and Pu'u'Ohulu Kai on the Leeward coast. What better to reward yourself after a steep hike than a lovely little picnic?
2) Lulumahu Falls
My husband and I love to hike – and perhaps one of our favorite memories was the short hike we took to Lulumahu Falls to share a picnic lunch, perched upon a boulder, looking into a beautiful waterfall, and pool below. If you aren’t on Oahu, any waterfall should do – but we love the short, but beautiful hike.
3) Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Seriously, where else in America would you be able to have a nice picnic overlooking an active volcano?
4) Kilauea Lighthouse
Located in Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is this splendid little lighthouse, the perfect backdrop for an afternoon picnic with your family, friends, or that special someone. On Oahu, check out Makapu’u lighthouse.
5) Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden
Located just nine miles outside of Hilo, the natural setting, and gorgeous landscape serves as a wonderful backdrop for a picnic lunch. You’ll have to check to see if other botanical gardens in the state allow picnic lunches.
6) Pick a beach – any beach.
I know, I know, this is almost too obvious – but who can blame me? A picnic on the beach is one of those quintessential island activities, whether during the day between journeys into the ocean, or with a bottle of wine at sunset. Really, any beach will do – though the less crowded, the better, in my opinion.
