The Little Known Hiking Path in Hawaii is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

Hawaii's Lapakahi State Historical Park Trail is the perfect place to bring in the new year. Along this hike, you'll enjoy scenic views, education, and solitude.

The first of the year is a time when we focus on progress, improvement, and reaching goals. I love setting New Year’s resolutions and this year, I have one main goal — spend more time outside. While here in Hawaii, sunshine and fresh air are plentiful, I want to add a little movement to my time outdoors, and to do so, I’m planning to spend more time on the trails. Located at Lapakahi State Historical Park on the Big Island, there is a short, easy, and fascinating trail that is certainly on my list. In fact, it may be one of the best first hikes of the year.

Lapakahi State Historical Park is a beautiful destination located along the Kohala Coast. This Hawaii state park is home to preserved remnants of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village, gorgeous coastal views, and the Lapakahi State Historical Park Trail.

The Lapakahi State Historical Park Trail is a family-friendly loop trail that takes you through a small portion of the park. The loop trail is 0.8 miles and flat, making it a delightful adventure for hikers of all ages.

While this trail allows you to get outdoors, explore, and enjoy some of the Big Island’s exquisite beauty, it is quite educational as well. As you walk, you’ll come across several informational signs that teach you all about the Hawaiian culture and many of the archaeological sites found within this state park.

Despite the short distance of this trail, I recommend you don’t rush through it. Not only should you stop and read each of the signs along your way, but stop and enjoy the ocean views as well. As you walk near the water, keep an eye out for whales, seals, dolphins, and other incredible wildlife. You never know what you will spot on this adventure.

And, even better, you may get to enjoy the views all by yourself. The Lapakahi State Historical Park Trail is not a busy hike, making it easy to enjoy some quiet and solitude in such a remarkable setting. Be patient and enjoy your time here — it’s a place where you can relax, recharge, and disconnect from life’s demands.

Your journey may not be long but it can be hot and there’s little protection from harsh UV rays. Make sure you have adequate sun protection and plenty of water before you hit the trail. I also recommend all hikers wear sturdy shoes to protect against rocks and other elements along the way.

The Lapakahi State Historical Park Trail has so much to offer: short distance, easy terrain, history, education, ocean views, and quiet. This little-known hiking path is the perfect place to bring in the new year.
