There’s A Secret Waterfall In Hawaii Known As Kopiliula Falls, And It’s Worth Seeking Out
From towering cascades you can only witness via helicopter tour to short waterfalls that cascade into small pools you can swim in, the waterfalls you’ll find in Hawaii are truly incredible. And while you’ll find several Hawaii waterfalls hiding in plain sight — no hiking required — there are even more that are found off-the-beaten-path and only accessible via a hiking trail. Today, we’re featuring a secret cascade nestled along Maui’s famous Hana Highway that’s accessible only via a short, two-mile trail.
Because this incredible destination is stream-fed, it is important to issue a friendly warning about the risks associated with flash flooding, and leptospirosis bacteria found in many of Hawaii’s natural pools. It is advised that you check weather reports and ocean conditions before heading out for the day, never swim in these pools when you have open wounds, and to always watch your step. With that warning out of the way, let’s lace up our hiking boots and let the adventure begin.
Waterfalls litter Maui’s Hana Highway, though some are more well-known than others. One hidden gem, Kopiliula Falls, is not only underrated, but it is also beautiful and worthy of a little adventure.
Nestled along the Kopiliula Stream, you’ll find several incredible cascades here, and this short, trail that meanders two miles upstream shows off some of the best.
Rated as moderate, this trail is perfect for anyone who enjoys and is used to hiking in the Aloha State. Pack plenty of water and snacks and wear comfy clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy and wet.
With the trailhead found just off the highway, it's hard to miss this hidden gem.
Follow the stream mauka as it twists its way uphill and be prepared to scramble along the rocky bed and up along deep water channels carved into the ancient lava flow. You’ll also get wet since the only way to access the larger fall is the climb the smaller falls first.
Don't forget to turn around and snap a few photos of the Pacific Ocean. The views along this trail — both mauka and makai — truly are second-to-none.
So, what are you waiting for? Chasing waterfalls in the Aloha State has never been so much fun.
