This Waterfall Swimming Hole In Hawaii Is So Hidden You’ll Probably Have It All To Yourself

Discover the secluded and picturesque Kalauao Falls in Oahu, perfect for a serene waterfall hike and swim.

From Kauai to Hawaii Island and everywhere in between, the Hawaiian Islands are home to countless incredible waterfall-fed swimming holes perfect for an afternoon spent relaxing and splashing around. Some of these spots are more popular than others, and while we love Maunawili Falls, there’s another waterfall swimming hole nearby that’s off the beaten path just enough that you might just find you have the dreamy destination to yourself, depending on when you visit, of course.

Before we dive into this waterfall-fed pool, we’d like to issue a reminder about safety. Because this incredible waterfall in Hawaii is stream-fed, it is important to issue a friendly warning about the risks associated with flash flooding, and leptospirosis bacteria found in many of Hawaii’s natural pools. You should check weather reports and ocean conditions before heading out for the day, never swim here if you have open wounds, and always watch your step.

Nestled within the 384-acre Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area on Oahu is Kalauao Falls, a striking waterfall that is as beautiful as it is secluded.

This lesser-known trail begins off the moderately-trafficked Aiea Loop Trail and leads hikers on a journey into the Kalauao Valley to a hidden waterfall that looks like something out of a fantasy novel.

Hike through a verdant forest along a pleasant, mostly shady trail meanders through lush groves of lemon eucalyptus, Norfolk pines, and native koa and ohia trees along the ridge on the west side of Halawa Valley and into the Kalauao Valley below before encountering this picturesque waterfall.

You might even encounter a few jaw-dropping views along the way. Can you imagine a more awe-inspiring spot to stop for a quick breather or to enjoy a much-needed snack?

This intermediate trail, which was originally created in 1930 and later modified in 1965 by the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club, is littered with steep climbs, striking views, and plenty of mud.

Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting muddy and be aware that you will need to make a handful of stream crossings. Don't forget to pack plenty of water and hike in a group — this is one trail you won't want to tackle unprepared or alone.

Kalauao Falls is best visited a couple days after a nice rain — the waterfall should be flowing, but you won’t encounter the high brown waters you might find if you hiked immediately after the rain.

Surrounded by lush greenery, Kalauao Falls is just hidden enough that it's not terribly difficult — or illegal — to visit but is still off the beaten path enough that you might just find you have the place to yourself. Plus, this might just be one of the most picturesque waterfall swimming holes we've ever seen.
